Bio

Hello!

I’m Meagan Bussert (formerly Meagan Collins). I was born and raised in Oklahoma and now reside in Indiana.

I didn’t discover my love for poetry, specifically haiku, until 2014. It started out as a writing exercise at a high school summer arts program (shoutout to Quartz Mountain!). Since then, it has become a passion and is also a common pastime for me and my husband.

Haiku gives me a new space to appreciate the world, myself, and my loved ones. It is therapeutic. It is powerful. It is vivid. It is the one form of poetry I’ve found that I consistently connect with. I find gratitude, surprise, sadness, nostalgia, and joy in haiku. It grounds me in everyday moments and allows me to view my own memories through a new perspective.

I strive to write haiku that honors the Japanese tradition while using my own Midwestern American sensibilities and memories to modernize the form and make it more accessible to Western readers.

I hope you enjoy reading through my published works as well as checking out my unpublished works on social media. And be sure to check out the Resources tab with just about every haiku journal listed!
